Stunning Navajo ring
This sterling silver ring is delicately inlaid with black-jet, ironwood, American turquoise, chrysocolla, white buffalo bone, and Zuni stone.
Fine engravings adorn the setting and seem to tell a story, a legend whose profound meaning belongs to Native American culture. However, we can make out motifs evoking rain and clouds. Powerful symbols, they embody water, the source of life, nourishing crops and giving man the strength to overcome trials and dangers.
Inlay is a Native jewelry-making process, mastered by the Zuni tribe, but here carefully crafted by a Navajo silversmith: genuine gemstones (Sonoran turquoise in this case, known for its gorgeous shades of sky-blue to mint-green), are cut and assembled by hand to create a geometric pattern. The whole is polished to a smooth, elegant finish.
This type of marquetry is called "channel inlay" and can be recognized by the fine silver bars that compartmentalize the stones.
