Zuni belt buckle
This beautiful Zuni belt buckle is made of an inlay of black-jet, mother-of-pearl, coral and Sleeping Beauty turquoise (Arizona), set on sterling silver. There is a Kachina named “Eagle Dancer.”
The Eagle Dance is a famous ceremonial during which the Eagle Dancer performs a choregraphy that represents the movements of the eagle flying and hunting. The eagle is a very important wild animal in Native culture. It is believed to have superpowers, such as controlling the rain and communicating with the gods.
Inlay is a meticulous process emblematic of the Zuni's silversmiths: stones are cut and assembled by hand to create a pattern (geometric or figurative). The whole is then polished to a smooth and elegant finish. It's a high-end process, and the result is of unparalleled finesse.
