A bit of history:
At the start of the American Civil War, the coins were melted down to recover the metal. Postage stamps replaced them in this role, and on July 17, 1862, the U.S. Congress authorized the printing of 5, 10, 25 and 50-cent coinage stamps. These stamps could be exchanged for postage stamps, or in $5 lots of real banknotes.
