One of a Kind piece - Navajo handcraft
Artist : Stanford Yazzie
Superb sterlin silver cuff bracelet set with an inlaid cross in coral, jet and turquoise.
This cuff was made with one of the ancestral processes of Navajo jewelry: the Tufa Cast technique.
The artist takes a mold made of volcanic stone (tufa) and divises it in two parts. In the first part, he carves a design of his choice, melts silver in, and tightly covers it with the second part of the mold. Once the silver is hard, the mold eventually breaks, making this piece a unique item. This technique creates a jewel of traditional rough aspect on which we can clearly see the beautiful lumps of tufa stone. The artist shows great skill here, with precise work that demands a great deal of technique. Fine silver lines shine alongside delicate prints.
This cuff bracelet perfectly reflects the exceptional craftsmanship of Navajo artisans. It features molded crosses called “Crossroads Cross”, a symbol of choice and decision. You can see that there are several crosses. There are two discreet ones and a larger one in the center.
The artist shows great mastery here, with precise work requiring a great deal of technique. Fine silver lines shine alongside delicate prints.
The background has been oxidized to bring out all the fine details. The whole is framed by a thick, smooth frame, like a quiet force in the midst of chaos.
