Kachinas

In the Hopi religion, each thing has two aspects in the world : visual and spriritual. Kachinas carry the prayers of the humans.

Natives pray to receive rain and bountiful crops, good health and plenty of game. Friends with the deities, they bring gifts and food. They also teach good behaviour and the consequences from bad conduct.

The Kachinas appear to the Hopis in a physical form (buffalo, eagle, corn…) dancing and singing during various ceremonies. Dances take place from dawn to dusk. When the ceremonies are over, the spirits go back to their world. Dances are always an important part of the social and spiritual life of the tribe. Natives believe that dancing refreshes the spirit of the earth and maintains the force of life in the tribe.
