Navajo ring with a Kingman turquoise (Arizona) set in mat sterling silver.
This ring is representative of Navajo jewelry : the turquoise is surrounded by a thin twisted wire reminding the lasso and the fact that the Natives consider the stone must be tamed as a wild animal.
The setting is adorned of palm shapes that are often found on Navajo's jewels and the whole is made with the sandcast process : The artist takes a mold made of sand (sandcast) and divises it in two parts. In the first part, he carves a design of his choice, melts silver in, and tightly covers it with the second part of the mold. Once the silver is hard, the jewel created has a traditionnal rough aspect on which we can clearly see the beautiful lumps of the sandcast. A turquoise is afterwards set on the jewel.
