Zuni fetish pendant

Bear carved in mother-of-pearl with details of its face and paws inlaid with black-jet and Sleeping Beauty turquoise (Arizona).
 

On one of its side, we can see a Sunface inlaid with yellow mother-of-pearl, black-jet, Sleeping Beauty turquoise and coral. Sunface is the Sun Father, symbol of life, it is omnipresent in Zuni's culture. 

On its other side is a mother-of-pearl arrowhead, tied to its back with a silver rod that allows to pass a necklace or a cord. On the traditional fetishes, the arrowhead reinforce the power of the animal.
 

The bear is a symbol of strength, health and knowledge.
 

At the time when the Zuni lived from agriculture and hunting, these amulets were indispensable to hunters, who never failed to take them with them on their expeditions. The fetishes ensure the benevolence of the soul. Each animal represents its own spirit, its own inner strength and protects the wearer.
