Artist : Stella Teller
This beautiful pottery representing a Hopi Story Teller was made by the artist Stella Teller, respected and acclaimed in the field of Native American pottery, descendant of a generation of women potters.
This pottery, with its fine workmanship and many delicately painted details in natural pigments, is representative of Stella Teller's superb work.
The Story Teller is a typical Native figure. She is a woman, surrounded by children and sometimes animals, who is the guardian of the oral tradition. It is the Story Tellers who pass on and keep alive the various legends and stories related to Native traditions.
The Story Teller is a typical Native figure, represented as a Hopi woman recognizable by her typical hairstyle with two beautiful buttons above the ears. This story teller is adorned with a beautiful turquoise necklace around her neck and dressed in a traditional shawl, beautifully belted at her waist. Two child figures rest on her laps : a very young child who accompanies the Story Teller in her singing, and a baby in a papooze. The papooze is a traditional baby carrier. Positioned inside, the baby is kept straight, warm and can be easily carried by his mother.
